No TV, no computer and no phone in the house. What do you do? Right, regularly throw a party and dine extensively!
Already at the end of the 16th century table manners were discussed, though in our eyes now on a still quite primitive manner. Spoon, knife and hands were the only utensils available then.
Why does a meal consist of courses? The most common explanation stems from a custom that arose in the Middle Ages to serve a meal in several stages. Each course could consist from three up to twelve different dishes. Naturally the best and most expensive dishes stood near the main guests at the main table, the less valuable ones on the other tables. Such a feast could easily consist of six to ten courses. The higher the stature of the host, the more courses. It will not surprise you that such a feast could take a whole day.
Dining still has a social function. We gather at the table with our family, extended family, friends and business associates.
During our presentation we will take you through time until we arrive at contemporary table manners. Afterwards you will know how etiquette evolved and how it stands at present.
